Fans of the long-time Dandy/Beano parody superhero Bananaman will be pleased with the news that has been creeping around the Internet for the past day or two. Bananaman, the alter ego of schoolboy Eric, will be coming to cinema screens in 2015 thanks to a new film from Elstree Studio Productions; the company previously responsible for crime thriller St George’s Day.

There is little information available about the film so far and representatives from The Dandy and Elstree were unavailable for comment at the time of publication. The website for the film, bananamanmovie.com is showing nothing but stars and a modern, orchestral version of the 80’s cartoon theme tune.

Nevertheless, the project has been confirmed as a legitimate one and this can only mean good things for The Dandy; which was forced to move to all-digital publication in 2012 due to falling sales.

Bananaman is a parody super hero, created as a pastiche of Superman, Captain Marvel and similar figures. Now superhero films are becoming far more gritty and serious, bringing a totally slapstick, zany character to cinemas feels like a step in the right direction.
